Air-dry Clay Bowl Unicorn Craft

Unicorn Craft - Supplies

  • Plastic wrap (cling film)
  • Acrylic paint pen
  • Paint
  • Baking paper (or smooth surface)

How to make an Air Dry Clay Bowl

STEP ONE: Gather all your supplies

Before you get started, go ahead and gather up your supplies so you have everything ready to go. You will need to make this clay bowl in two stages as the white clay must be left to dry before being painted.

You will need to work on a smooth surface that you can easily lift your clay from, baking paper works well for this.

STEP TWO: Prep the clay bowl

To get started, roll out the white air dry clay so it is a little wider than the small bowl you are using. The clay needs to be about 1cm thick. Lay the bowl on top of the clay. Cut around the edges of the bowl with your knife, leaving room to cut out the ears at the top.

TIP: Make sure you trace this as one single shape as we do not want the ears to detach.

Once you have cut out your circle shape with ears attached wet the tip of your fingers and smooth out the edges of the clay as shown below. Cover the small bowl in plastic wrap and then place the clay shape inside it. Press the clay piece down slightly so it touches the edges of the bowl.  As the clay dries, it will take the shape of the bowl.

STEP THREE: Shape the unicorn mane + horn

Roll out 3 thin strips of clay to use for the unicorn's mane. You'll want these long enough so they stretch across the top of the bowl.

Then roll out two large strips of clay and twist them together to create the unicorn's horn.

(see image below)

Attach the mane and horn to the clay bowl shape using water. Be sure to press them firmly so that they mould together and won't fall off once the clay dries.

Leave the clay bowl to dry for 1-2 days.

STEP FOUR: Paint the unicorn detail on the dried clay

Once the air dry clay has dried (which will take a couple of days) draw on the unicorn eyes. Start with pencil to plan out the shape and then go back over them with an acrylic marker once you're happy with them.

Paint the unicorn's mane and horn with the acrylic paint colour of your choice. Paint the inside of the ears pink. Paint the cheeks using a sponge paintbrush dipped in pink paint, dab it onto paper first to remove any excess paint and then dab once onto the cheeks.
