Who painted The Scream?

Before we take out our paintbrushes, let’s get into the backstory of this classic painting. The artist who created The Scream was Edvard Munch. He was a printmaker and painter born in the small town of Adalsbruk, Norway.

Unlike many of his peers, Munch became very famous in his time and was very well known all across Europe, becoming a key figure in the expressionist and symbolist movement of the early twentieth century.

During his career, he explored different ways of representing emotion in his artwork, and The Scream is considered to be the epitome of his work.  Although there’s no final opinion on precisely what The Scream represents, it’s thought to express human anxiety and fear.

Fun fact:

Did you know that there are five versions of the same painting? Munch created the first one using oil, tempera, and pastels, two other versions using only pastels, a lithographic version, and another just in tempera. Talking about being productive!

Let their imagination run wild and mix all the colours they desire. We loved the 'blood red sky' Edvard Much painted so we kept to red shades for the top of the painting.

STEP 3: Add self portrait to 'The Scream'painting

For this step, you can glue a picture of your little one onto the completed template. Have fun taking photographs of your kids recreating the pose in the original painting. This could also lead on to an interesting discussion about what would make them scream!

You can either photograph your child's full body to trim and stick over the original figure from 'The Scream' painting or you can cut a small version of just your child's face to add on top of the original figures face.

Whichever option you choose, cut out the photograph and stick it in place. Of course you can also do this art scream project without a photograph by drawing your own screaming self portrait to stick on top, or simply by colouring in the printable.
