Hatching fizzy dinosaur eggs

My kids love everything that's fizzy or bubbly and dinosaur-themed so an activity mixing both is a total dream! They had so much fun making the baking soda eggs and watching the bubbly reaction as they hatched the eggs.

Hatching fizzy dinosaur eggs is a great way to start teaching preschoolers science in a fun and  entertaining way. It's also another excellent sensory activity to play with around Easter, why not switch the dinosaurs for little chicks to hatch!

Hatching Dinosaur Eggs Supplies:

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Food colouring or liquid watercolours
  • Water
  • Plastic dinosaurs
  • Jug
  • Mixing bowl
  • Small jars
  • Pipettes

Hatching Dinosaur Eggs Directions:

STEP 1: Prepare your supplies

If you are doing this science experiment with young children be prepared! It is good to have all your supplies ready to hand so that they can get started straight away.

To make the baking soda eggs you will need baking soda, coloured water in a jug and a small bowl for mixing your ingredients in. You can use liquid water colours or food colouring to make your coloured water.

STEP 2: Make your baking soda eggs!

Take your small bowl and pour baking soda into it. Children will love to help with this so hand them a spoon and let them fill the bowl.

Slowly add coloured water to the bowl you just filled with baking soda. Keep adding more coloured water until you get a paste-texture. If it is too dry just keep adding the coloured water until it's just right. If it gets too sticky, add more baking soda.

STEP 3: Give your baking soda eggs some shape.

Now it is time to shape the baking soda and coloured water paste you just made in the last step. Take a small plastic dinosaur and mould the mixture around it in the shape of an egg. Younger children may need a little help with this step.

STEP 4: Allow the eggs to dry.

Leave your dinosaur eggs to dry completely. If you have impatient little ones, no worries. You can speed up the drying process by putting the eggs in your fridge or freezer.

STEP 5: Fun time!

Now it is time to hatch the dinosaurs. Set the baking soda eggs up on a plate or small tray and fill your small jars with white vinegar and colouring (again either liquid watercolour or food colouring works well).

Invite your child to hatch the eggs by using a pipette to squirt the coloured vinegar onto the eggs.

STEP 6: Watch the bubbly baking soda and vinegar reaction

Watch the eggs fizz up as the vinegar comes into contact with them. Continue adding vinegar until the dinosaurs have all hatched.

STEP 7: Enjoy some sensory play

The dinosaurs hatching is not the end of this activity. The baking soda and vinegar mixture left behind is fantastic for a bit of fun sensory play!

PRO TIP: Why not mix this activity up a little by having mini penguins or chicks in the eggs or even go all out and add some unicorns!

Kids love this chemical reaction. It is so much fun watching the baking soda and vinegar reaction take place and kids will love adding more and more vinegar to keep the fizzing and bubbling going.

We hope you and your little ones had fun hatching your own fizzy dinosaur eggs!
