Painting has to be one of the most enjoyable ways to practice colour theory with kids. There's something about painting a printable colour wheel (whether it's a plain circle like the printable color wheel below, or a turtle, like in one of our other activities) that's so fun for them. And mixing paint to get a new colour is so fascinating to their little eyes.

What I love about this colour wheel for kids in particular though, is that it's a great reference when you're done. You can set it aside for later to use alongside other activities as you practice colour theory.

How to Make a Colour Wheel for Kids

STEP ONE: Gather your supplies

Before you get started, make sure to gather up all your supplies, including the printable. You'll need to scroll down to get a copy of the printable colour wheel and print it off onto white paper or cardstock. There's a version with colour labels and one without.

To prepare your paint, add a little red, yellow, and blue paint to a paper plate or mixing palette. Make sure to leave space in between each colour to mix the secondary colours.

STEP TWO: Paint your printable colour wheel

Start by painting each of the primary colours on the printable colour wheel. Make sure to skip a slice with each colour so there's space to paint your secondary colours after mixing. (see image below)

Now to start mixing! You'll take a little of the yellow and blue to make green, blue and red to make purple, and red and yellow to make orange.

Printable Colour Wheel Variations

We know you can take any activity further, and that includes this colour wheel for kids to enjoy! Here are just a few ideas to mix things up (no pun intended).

  • Let kids explore colours with finger painting rather than using paint brushes.
  • Try using different tools like sponges or cotton swabs.
  • Turn your colour wheel into a spinner by adding a fastener to it and attaching to a paper plate or piece of paper.
