How to make a Santa handprint card or gift bag

STEP 1: Grab all your supplies

Before we get started, grab all your supplies so everything is readily available. I don't think I need to stress the importance of having everything ready when it comes to crafting with small kids.

As this Santa handprint craft involves painting your toddler or preschooler's hands I would suggest that you have a bowl of soapy water and a towel or some baby wipes to hand for easy cleanup.

Before you start you will need to decide if you would like to make a Santa handprint card or a Santa handprint gift bag, or why not make both!

If making a card you will need to print your handprints onto a roll of brown paper, you can cut the handprints out after to glue onto your card. If you would prefer to make a gift bag you will need to print your handprints directly onto your brown paper bag.

Once you have decided whether you would like to make a card or gift bag (or both!) lay out the brown paper or paper bag you will be printing on.

STEP 2: Paint hands

Now it is time for the messy part! Squirt out some red and white paint and then paint your child's thumb red for Santa's hat and all their other fingers white for Santa's beard (see image below). Do not paint the palm of their hand as we need that space kept blank for Santa's face.

Toddlers and preschoolers will most likely need help with the painting, but if you are doing this handprint Santa craft with older children they might enjoy painting their hands themselves.

Make sure you have added plenty of paint to your child's hand to ensure you make a good print and then when you are happy with the coverage firmly press your child's hand onto the paper.  Carefully remove their hand without letting it move around too much, as that will smear the print. You will now be left with a handprint like the one in the image below.

STEP 3: Decorate Santa handprint

Leave your handprint to dry and then in the empty space between Santa's beard and the bottom of his hat, glue on two googly eyes and a small red or pink pom-pom as a nose to complete Santa's face. See the image below.

If desired, glue a small white pom-pom at the end of Santa's hat and draw a smile with pencil or pen.

Finalise Santa handprint card

If making a Santa handprint card finish up your Santa craft by cutting the handprint out and glueing it to a piece of folded gold card to turn your handprint Santa into an adorable Christmas card.
