How to make circle art

STEP 1: Collect your supplies

Before you get started, collect all your supplies so they're already laid out in front of you. Find circle-shaped items for your toddler to dip into paint. Bottles, lids, food containers, paper tubes, etc all work great for this circle art activity. You could even get your toddlers and preschoolers to help you hunt for them!

STEP 2: Prepare your workspace

Next, roll out some paper onto the table and lay out paint in a variety of colours for your toddler. Grab your circle-shaped items and set them within reach.

STEP 3: Invite your toddler to paint

Now it's time to paint! Invite your toddler to dip the circle-shaped items into the paint and "stamp" them onto the paper. Sit back and watch as they experiment and create different designs.

STEP 4: Extend your play

The fun doesn't stop there! You can always extend this painting activity depending on your toddler or preschoolers skill level. Some ideas might include:
  • Find more shapes: See what other shapes you can find around the house much like we did in this shape painting activity.
  • Recognition practice: Practice shape and colour recognition by directing your toddler (ie "What colour is that paint? What shape did you make?")
  • Practice sizes: Start talking about the different sizes of circles of the different objects (ie "Is that a small circle or a big circle? Can you stamp a little circle inside the big circle?")
There are so many ways to extend art for kids. See what you can come up with!
