How to Make Moon Dough

STEP 1: Let's get started!

First things first. To start you first need to find a large mixing bowl and pour the flour into it. This recipe uses 8 cups of flour, but feel free to double the recipe if you would like to make a larger quantity.

STEP 2: Add the oil.

Now add the baby oil into that same bowl. If you have doubled the amount of flour to make a larger quantity, don't forget to double the amount of oil too.

If you don't have any baby oil, cooking oil also works. Another benefit of using cooking oil is that it makes this a taste safe moon dough (although it wouldn't taste good!)

STEP 3: Mix, mix and mix!

Now start mixing the baby oil and the flour together. Be patient and stir this mixture very well until the dough and the oil are mixed together smoothly.

Once the dough it's mixed well, start mixing the dough with your hands until the dough no longer has big clumps of flour and oil and the texture is grainy.

DIY moon dough

You homemade moon dough is now ready to be played with.  See I told you it was an easy sensory play recipe!

Pour your moon dough into a small plastic tray or a sensory bin and invite your child to explore the texture. It is a lot of fun making balls of cloud dough by squeezing it in your hand.

If you want to make coloured cloud dough add a few drops of colouring to the oil before mixing it with the flour.

Store your cloud dough in an airtight container. If it dries out you can add more oil before using it again.

You could pretend the moon dough is the surface of the moon and have fun dropping or pressing small rocks into the cloud dough to create imprints like moon craters.
