Hunt through your book collection to find books on fun topics like aliens, friendship and witches and then snuggle up and get ready to read.

It is so important to encourage young children to read a variety of different books and this reading scavenger hunt makes children want to pick up and read books that they perhaps wouldn't otherwise. 

In order to complete the reading scavenger hunt challenge children need to read a total of 16 books on different themes. There are also some bonus reads to encourage children to read even more books!

Reading Scavenger Hunt - Reading Challenge for Kids



This reading challenge for kids couldn't be simpler. Just grab the printable scavenger hunt using the link below and print it out. (use the code - reading - to get the printable free) Then ask your child to color the relevant image each time you read them a book on one of the themes included. 

Older children may enjoy reading the books and completing this fun reading challenge independently. They may also like to fill out our my favourite book printable.  


The book themes covered by this reading scavenger hunt are:

  • pirates
  • superheroes
  • space
  • a teddy
  • a dinosaur
  • a dog
  • a vehicle
  • the weather
  • sport
  • food
  • friendship
  • aliens
  • a witch or wizard
  • a party of celebration
  • prince or princess
  • an insect


Once you have read a book on a theme color the matching image. If you manage to complete the reading challenge and read all the books included have a go at the bonus reads


The bonus reads are:

  • a poem
  • comic book
  • pop up book
  • rhyming book
  • a non fiction book


You are also challenged to find a good joke in a joke book to tell someone and to build a cosy den to snuggle up with your favorite book.

This reading scavenger hunt would be fun to do any time of the year, but it would be especially great to do during book week.
