Supplies for the pirate puppet craft
- Pirate Puppet Template
- Cardstock or Construction Paper
- Paper Bags
- Glue
- Scissors
- Black Marker
- Gold Glitter Foam Sheet or Gold Glitter Cardstock
How to make the pirate puppet craft
STEP 1: Gather all the supplies
Before you get started, I recommend rounding up all the supplies for the pirate craft. This makes making the pirate paper bag puppets much easier - especially when you have toddlers and preschoolers involved!
Along with gathering the supplies, make sure you have your pirate puppet template downloaded and printed out. You can get it by scrolling down below.
STEP 2: Create the shirt and belt of the pirate craft
Once you have your pirate puppet template downloaded and printed out, it's time to cut it out!
After you've done that, cut large squares of paper and glue them onto the paper bag. You'll want to glue on the side that the square bottom flaps up.
Next, glue strips of coloured paper onto the bags to give the shirts some stripes. (see image below) You'll also want to glue a brown strip of paper across the bag to give the pirate puppet a belt.
Make sure to trim off any excess paper from the edges using your scissors.
STEP 3: Create the vest or hat for the pirate puppet
Some of the pirate paper bag puppets have a vest or hat. For the pirate puppet with the vest, you're going to fold a piece of paper in half and create a jagged vest. You'll want to cut all the way around in order to create two identical pieces. Then, glue the vest onto the pirate's shirt. Use additional paper to add more details.
For the pirate puppet with the hat, you're going to fold a white piece of paper in half and cut a "fluffy" shape out, somewhat resembling a cloud. Unfold the paper and glue onto the pirate's shirt.
STEP 4: Create the belt for the pirate paper bag puppet
Now, cut rectangles from gold glitter foam or cardstock and glue them onto the pirate puppet's belts. Cut a small rectangle from black paper and glue into the center of the belts.
STEP 5: Create the head pieces for the pirate craft
Next, you are going to create the head piece for the pirate puppets. Trace the head template onto flesh colored paper, then cut out and glue it on the top of the paper bag.
Once you've done that, trace the bandana template onto your desired coloured paper, then cut out and glue onto the top of the pirate's heads. Cut some pieces of coloured paper to add accents to the bandanas as pictured below.
After you've done that, cut hair pieces from coloured paper and slip it under the bandana or hat while the glue is still wet. Cut some earrings from gold glitter foam or paper and glue them onto the pirates ears.
STEP 6: Create final details for the pirate puppet
For the pirate with the hat, trace the hat template onto black paper and cut it out. Add yellow accents with paper and use white paper to create a skull and crossbone and then glue the hat together. Then, glue the hat onto the top of the pirate's head.
Trace the eye template onto white and black cardstock, then glue the eyes together and glue them onto the pirate's face.
For the pirate with the hat, trace the mustache template onto paper and then cut it out and glue onto the pirate's face. For the girl pirate, use the black paper to add eyelashes to her eyes. Use a black marker to add a nose, mouth, and beard stub on the boy pirates.
Trace the sword or hook template onto cardstock, cut it out, glue together, and then glue onto the side of your pirate puppets.
You now have a set of super fun pirate paper bag puppets that your toddler or preschooler is going to love not only making but playing with for endless hours! There's even a template for a parrot if you want to add one to your pirate crew!
