Fizzy Egg Baking Soda and Vinegar Reaction

There are tons of fun baking soda and vinegar science experiments for kids,  but since Easter is fast approaching we though we would have fun with some plastic Easter eggs as we tried out this fun fizzy egg science experiment. This awesome Easter science experiment is a great learning activity. Children as young as toddlers and preschoolers will have so much fun playing and exploring this colourful baking soda and vinegar reaction, you can count on it!

What I love most about baking soda and vinegar science experiments is the speed at which the reaction takes place. There is no waiting around, as soon as the vinegar and baking soda meet the fizzing begins which is very satisfying for young children. 

Using just a few ingredients that you most likely already have in your kitchen you can create this magical science experience in minutes! 

Children from toddlers to teens will love this experiment, even adults will love it! It is so satisfying to watch. My children aged 2-8 all love baking soda and vinegar experiments.

Fizzy Egg Baking Soda and Vinegar Reaction 

Fizzy Egg Science Experiment Supplies:

• Small tray
• Baking soda
• Plastic Easter eggs
• Food colouring
• Vinegar

How to set up your fizzy egg baking soda and vinegar science experiment:

STEP 1: Prepare your supplies!

You don't need many supplies to set up this science experiment, just some plastic Easter eggs and a few supplies that you are likely to already have in your kitchen. It's a good idea to have some spare baking soda and vinegar as once the kids start this Easter science experiment they won't want to stop!

Prepare your workstation by laying down a wipeable table cloth.

STEP 2: Start with the baking soda

Get your small tray and fill it with baking soda. You don't need to be too accurate about the amount you are adding, just sprinkle it around the bottom of the tray.

STEP 3: Get your plastic eggs

One by one, add the plastic Easter eggs in the tray filled with the baking soda. Older children will enjoy setting this up themselves. We used an egg holder to keep some of the plastic eggs upright.

STEP 4: Add some colour

Fill each plastic egg with one or two drops of food colouring and then cover it with baking soda. You can use any colours for this experiment, use all the colours of the rainbow or stick to 2 or 3 colours so you can explore colour mixing.

Try to add at least 2 colours as kids love the surprise of seeing which colour is going to appear in each plastic egg.

STEP 5: Here's where the magic happens

Pour vinegar into the eggs that you have filled with food colouring and baking soda and watch them burst! Kids will love watching as the baking soda fizzes and foams up.

As vinegar is squirted into the different plastic eggs new colours will be revealed!

STEP 6: Repeat and watch the reaction over and over

The best thing about this baking soda and vinegar experiment is that you can do it again and again! Just keep topping up the baking soda in the eggs to keep the fun going!

How do you get the best baking soda and vinegar reaction?

As you can see from the images mixing baking soda and vinegar together creates an instant reaction and lots of fizz. Now if you want even more bubbling our top tip would be to add a drop of washing up liquid (dishwashing soap) to your baking soda mixture. You could add a drop into each egg.

We didn't add washing up liquid this time, but we did for our magic potion baking soda and vinegar experiment.

Ollie (aged 2) loved playing with the baking soda and vinegar mixture almost as much as watching the eggs fizz up. He spent a long time happily pouring the mixture from one egg to another and splashing his hand in it. I love all the bright colours that were produced as the colouring from the different plastic eggs mixed together. It looks so inviting!

Whilst toddlers and preschoolers will be happy exploring the seemingly magical reaction that takes place as they squirt vinegar onto the baking soda, older kids might be interested in finding out a little more about what is happening.

When baking soda and vinegar are mixed together a chemical reaction takes place. As the baking soda mixes with the vinegar (an acid) carbon dioxide is released which forms the bubbles in the fizzing mixture.
