Flower Pot Toadstool - An easy garden project for kids

How to make a Flower Pot Toadstool

STEP 1: Gather all the supplies

First things first - make sure you gather all your supplies for your flower pot toadstool. I try to avoid running around for my supplies while I'm making it as that just makes things way to hectic for me.

Luckily, this easy garden project doesn't require too many supplies so you should easily be able to round up everything you need and have them ready to go.

STEP 2: Paint the pot and base white

Now for the fun to begin! Grab your Terra Cotta pots and paint them both white. These will serve as the stems of the mushroom for your fairy garden toadstools.

I did two coats for this step, but do as many as you feel necessary.

STEP 3: Paint the lid with your colour of choice

Next, you'll flip the terra cotta lid and paint it with your choice of colours. In this example, I used green and red coloured paints (which are also listed in the supply list above). This will serve as the mushroom top for this DIY clay pot craft.

I did two coats for this step as well, and thankfully the paint dries very quickly when using Terra Cotta products.

STEP 4: Paint the polka dots on the top of the mushroom

This is where this project really starts to get magical - time for the polka dots to turn these Terra Cotta pots into fairy toadstools! Dip a round foam brush into the white paint and start having fun dabbing it on top of your mushroom. I bet kids would love to do this step.

Don't worry about messing this up - there truly is no wrong way to do it! Your fairy garden toadstool will look amazing no matter how you decide to go about the polka dots, I promise.

Once you've done that, you can step away for a few minutes as we need to wait for it to dry before moving onto the next step of our flower pot toadstool project.

STEP 5: Coat the top of your mushroom with a sealer

Be sure to wait for your mushroom to dry before moving onto this step! Once it's dry, we're going to coat it with a sealer. This clay pot craft will need to have sealer applied if it is to be placed outside. If you are keeping your flower pot toadstool indoors this step is not completely necessary.

STEP 6: Attach the mushroom top to the base with glue

This step is completely optional and really depends on where you plan to put your mushrooms. It also depends on what you plan to do with these flower pot toadstools after you finish this easy garden project. Are you making them as garden ornaments or are they for the children to play with?

If you choose to put your diy toadstool outside, you may want to attach your mushroom top to the base with an industrial glue, such as E6000.  Alternatively you could leave the top and base loose so that the kids can swap them around if they play fairies with them in the garden.
