How to Make a Diorama
STEP ONE: Gather your supplies
Before you get started, make sure you have all your supplies ready! If you haven't got your desert diorama printables yet, make sure to grab those from our shop! You'll want to have them printed onto thick white paper or thin white cardstock before you start.
STEP TWO: Prep the desert backdrop
To begin, cut two sides off your cardboard box so you're left with a shape like the one below. You want to make sure to leave a bit on each side in order to keep the box in shape.
Next, trim the edges off the backdrop pieces from the printable pack. Glue them on the back side of your cardboard box so you're left with something similar to the image shown below.
If the backdrop printables are too big for your box, you can overlap them a little bit.
STEP THREE: Prep the desert scene
Once you have made your desert backdrop, choose which animals and plants from the pack you want to include in your diorama. Colour them with markers or crayons and then cut them out.
Finish off by gluing the animals and plants where you want them on your desert backdrop. When you are happy with the number of animals and plants included in your desert scene, your desert craft is complete!
Why not add a few extras of your own to complete your desert diorama project!
Desert Diorama Ideas and Variations
If you're looking for some fun desert diorama ideas, we have a few extra ideas for you! We know you can extend any activity, especially diorama projects!
- Extend learning by adding labels, using fact cards, or bringing the life cycle and ecosystems into it.
- Glue torn yellow tissue paper to the bottom of the box for a textured ground, or why not glue on some real sand!
- Instead of gluing the desert-themed plant and animal pieces down, use popsicle sticks and cut a slit in the box. Then, you can move the animals around for a fun effect!
- Use other supplies you have lying around and get creative to see what you can come up with!
