STEP 1: Get your supplies ready

Before beginning this poppy craft you need to get all your supplies ready. You will need to cut the potato that you will be printing with in half lengthways.  (I like to cut a handle into the top of the potato to stop the potato slipping when printing.)

STEP 2: Make a potato print

Dip your potato into red paint and make 2 prints, 1 slightly above the other (see image below). Younger toddlers or preschoolers may need a little help with positioning the potato before making their prints.

STEP 3: Add a button

Make the centre of your poppy craft by glueing on a black button and then leave your poppy craft to dry.

STEP 4: Add a leaf and stem

Once your poppy is dry cut it out and glue on a stem and a leaf. The leaf can be cut out of green cardstock or green craft foam and the stem is made from a green craft stick.

STEP 5: Wear your poppy with pride

Add a bit of sticky tape or a safety pin to the back of the poppy craft and wear your poppy with pride.

Poppy Art - An alternative version of this poppy craft

We also made some poppies in a field .  Instead of using a button for the centre of the poppy we dipped a cork into black paint and used it to print with ( you could even use a fingerprint!).  We printed the green stems by dipping the edge of a piece of cardboard into green paint.

This animation is a great way of helping kids appreciate the emotions involved in war and remembrance.

We hope that you enjoy making this easy poppy craft and use it as a good opportunity to talk about remembrance day.
