Painted Firework Toast

Painted firework toast is such a fun activity for kids.  Toddlers and preschoolers as well as older kids will love this edible artwork! Painting on bread is a simple way to involve children with celebrating bonfire night or New Years Eve. Simply paint firework shapes and patterns on bread, pop the bread in the toaster and your tasty snack is complete.

To paint on bread you will need: 

  • milk
  • food colouring
  • bread 
  • new paint brushes

painted toast recipe: edible art idea for kids

For this activity we used shop bought food colouring but have since bought wilton icing colour gel. These gels make lovely bright colours and you only need to use a tiny bit. (UK linkUS link). We used these gels when making our heart painted toast.

To make the 'paint' mix milk with a few drops of food colouring in your chosen colours.

Paint patterns onto the bread. 

I painted some fireworks myself to give Harry an idea of what to do (and because I quite fancied giving it a go!)

Then Harry got started.  He painted lots of different coloured lines for his first piece.

Then we did a few where we flicked different colours onto the bread.

When you have finished your design pop the bread in the toaster and your firework toast is ready to eat.

  4. I think this is a fantastic idea! My 9 year old will love doing this! I think though, I would use brand new paint brushes, in fear of toxic chemicals that might be on the brushes from art use. Tammy x
